Review of the Olympus LS-10 MP3/WAV/WMA recorder

Olympus has been making some pretty memo recorders for a long while now. But now they (finally) introduced a recorder that uses wav and mp3 formats. And it works with SDHC (up to 8gb) cards, so you can expand the amount of storage to your needs.

Included in the package are this nice recorder, 2GB internal memory, bag, 2 AA batteries and even Cubase LE4!!. The recorder sports a mic-in, line-in, 2 speakers and a headphones output. The display is backlit so you can read in in the dark. Connected to a computer with USB2.0 it mounts as a external harddisk so transferring your recordings is easy.

Mark Nelson (O’Reilly.com) made an excellent in-depth review. I recommend reading it.

Review of the Olympus LS-10

And the Winner Is…
I think the LS-10 does as good a job recording music and voice as some recorders costing quite a bit more.
I like the Olympus LS-10 a lot. I’m tickled with the design, ergonomics, audio quality, and the rugged aluminum case. I even like the little carrying case; it’s just big enough for the recorder and a mini tripod.

I think this recorder is a direct competitor of the Edirol R-09HR, but with a retal price of $399 i would go for the edirol instead. Lets see if Olympus will decrease the price any time soon.

Running out of Space on your Laptop???

Then it is a good time to increase your storage space of your laptop (or other computer). We get more and more and more data and we want to have it. But our hard disk space is limited unfortunately. So if you have a USB port to spare then you can buy a USB harddisk.

Western Digital is releasing some interesting new models with lots of space. These USB (2.0) hard disk do not need a power supply and are nice and small. They fit in your pocket and are easy to take on travelling. So if you are a travelling preacher then go for it :

In a month or so this passport will be available in 500 GB. Current models have a storage space of 80, 120, 160, 200, 250 or 320 GB. I would recommend buying the biggest possible if you have the money.

If you need to upgrade your internal laptop hard disk then you can read my post with some guidelines on how to do this.

(New) WAV/MP3 Recorder PMD620 from Marantz

Marantz introduced in dec 2007 their latest incarnation of field WAV recorders. They used to make very expensive big field recorders, but now they saw the light and created a recorder that actually fits in your bhakta bag….

It runs on 2 AA batteries (yeah!) and uses SD/SDHC memory cards. Marantz boasts that it should run for 5 hrs. Some reviewers have found that is lasts upto 6 hrs. It can record in standard WAV format, and also in MP3, but the highest quality is limited to 192 Kbps.

Here are some related links

Last month ( apr 2008 ) Marantz released a new firmware (internal software) to address some nasty programming mistakes.

After reading the reviews i must conclude that the latest Edirol R-09HR still beats this recorder. The slow USB (1.1) is one of the reasons. But the PMD620 comes very close…..

New Minivox Lite

The new Minivox LiteAnchor Audio introduced in may their new Minivox, called Minivox Lite. It is a little smaller then the older Minivox and weighs 500 gr less.  You can connect your CD or MP3 player using the line input. According to their website the volume should match the old minivox. (with 108 dB at 1 meter)

The Minivox Lite works on standard AA batteries (10 of them!!). They recommend using NiMh rechargeable batteries. As an option a charger kit can be ordered.

The good old MinivoxThe old minivox was using 9 C type batteries. This explains why the minivox lite is “lighter”….

The new Minivox Lite looks cooler with the new bag then the old silly model. And the minivox lite can be used inside the bag… Take that you mini me vox
